Executive Summary
Sponsored by AARP, AFL-CIO, APPWP, EBRI, and WEB
The post-ERISA world of pensions has been filled with significant change for the government, plan sponsors, plan participants, and service providers. In order to highlight many of these changes and their implications for economic security, a conference was held in Washington, DC on December 6, 1994, "ERISA: 20 Years Later—A Look Back, A Look Ahead." This conference brought together many people with an interest in economic security to discuss ERISA, where it has been, where it may go in the future, and what all the changes may mean for retirement income security. This book is based on presentations and remarks made at the conference.
This book sets our viewpoints on many of the issues surrounding ERISA. It provides a range of opinions and alternative interpretations. It underlines the diversity that led to ERISA and the differences of perspective on what need to be done to reform ERISA in the future.
