Jake Spiegel is a Research Associate at the Employee Benefit Research Institute. He completed his undergraduate work in economics at Carnegie Mellon University and earned a master’s degree in applied economics from Johns Hopkins University.

Previously, Jake worked for Morningstar on their public policy research team, where he wrote a first-of-its-kind evaluation of health savings accounts. He also conducted economic analyses to define and inform Morningstar’s institutional positions on proposed regulations, and drafted recommendations based on these analyses that advanced the interests of individual investors. Before joining Morningstar, he was a research analyst at HelloWallet, where he conducted research on personal finance and financial wellness issues, such as the relationship between student loan debt and retirement savings, and the extent to which households built up more debt than retirement savings during the Great Recession.
